Watersheds of SEC and the Hugh Kaul Ecoscape

Sitting atop one of the highest hills on the floor of Jones Valley, the Southern Environmental Center and Birmingham-Southern College have sweeping views of two of the city’s most important watersheds.  To the north is Village Creek, which flows westward through the city, eventually joining the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River near the western edge of Jefferson County.  The SEC and the southern slopes of the campus – “The Hilltop” — drain to this watershed.  To the south of BSC is the Valley Creek watershed.  The southern slopes of the campus – “The Hilltop” – drain to this watershed.  Valley also flows westward and joins the Black Warrior River directly.  Both creeks have worked hard for the city.  Early on they provided drinking water.   Today they channel industrial waste, treated wastewater, and storm water away from the urban core of Birmingham.  Lately, both creeks have become focal points for greenways that promise to improve the living and working conditions in the city.
