The McWane Science Center rests on the floor of Jones Valley and is within the Southern Limestone/Dolomite Valleys and Low Rolling Hills level IV ecoregion. This ecoregion is one of karst topography – a landscape dominated by limestone and dolostone – interrupted occasionally by hills of chert and sandstone. The karst provides springs, caves, and alkaline soils that, in pre-settlement times, supported species-diverse broadleaf forests. Hills within the ecoregion provide habitat for plants and animals suited for dryer ecosystems. The region is nested within the Ridge and Valley (level III) ecoregion.
